  • okay so this is not an ‘official’ metric by any scale but i am curious so i just bullshitted my own (explanation on levels under the poll)

    what’s your horror media tolerance level?

    level 1

    level 2

    level 3

    level 4

    level 5

    level 6

    level 1 - can’t tolerate horror at all, actively avoids it at all costs

    level 2 - will watch a horror movie with friends/family if convinced but will definitely not enjoy it. screams at jumpscares and covers eyes at tense moments

    level 3 - can occasionally consume horror media. very easily startles at jumpscares. usually feels anxious/paranoid afterward

    level 4 - startles at jumpscares and generally feels uneasy after consuming horror media. avoids anything horror-related at night time

    level 5 - jumpscares are less effective, but can still startle. feels anxious during tense moments. horror mostly causes unease only at night time

    level 6 - has no problem consuming any kind of horror media alone at night. is largely unaffected by jumpscares. horror causes no feeling of fear or anxiety

  • You gotta write for funsies sometimes. Everything doesn’t have to be groundbreaking. Like. Who cares if it’s a little silly it is made out of love

  • I think a lot of people's advice for selling commissions as a fledgling artist really skims over the fact that selling commissions is like. 90% customer service.

    as a small sampler of examples, to sell commissions you have to:

    • be approachable and professional when advertising and selling your work;
    • have a clear and understandable terms of service that is either provided or easy to find;
    • set personal boundaries for what you will and won't draw, AND be able to enforce them, AND be able to do this without explaining every possible reason you have for not doing something (you can Just Say No.);
    • communicate clearly and often frequently to know what your clients want and ensure you're following their expectations;
    • be comfortable asking questions about those expectations, and know how to ask for clarification if something is described in a confusing way;
    • take accountability for mistakes, miscommunications, or delays;
    • be able to refuse to work for people who are exploiting you without feeling guilty;
    • manage payment information and receipts in a timely and organized manner (PLEASE use invoices rather than direct transfers)

    like everything about selling art is its own post of advice really (I could go on for ages about advertising, and that's not even something I do a lot of) but a lot of people just. overlook the fact that as the artist you are providing a service and you do need the basic skills to provide that service or you're going to run into issues.

  • additions:

    • Looking at other artist's TOS and copying what applies to you is pretty much always fine. Most artists will end up with something similar anyway. If you need specific copying permission, my ToS is here and you can lift as much of it as you like (though I haven't updated it to include AI use points yet)
    • "I could never sell comms if it requires communication skills" - you actually can! It's a skill you can learn, and for those who prefer communication by scripts, it's actually pretty easy to have a pre-written set of messages for check ins and clarifications. You don't have to have full on conversations or small talk if you don't want to. Just copy pasting a "Here's what's done, are there any changes you want to these unfinished areas?" kind of message is genuinely enough. Don't sell yourself short because you're shy and don't have a lot of experience yet; you can do it, and if you genuinely can't do that part on your own, you're allowed to ask for help - it's just worth having someone you know and trust help you when you need it rather than asking large groups about general questions. I believe in you.
    • Don't sell work you don't believe is worth the money. Talk yourself up, not down
  • I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.

    It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.

    We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a billionaire's window every time they think of it.

  • I love it when you can pick up an animator’s quirks.

  •      I’ve read in old interviews with Milt Khal’s fellow animators that he did the swaggle to purposefully show off. Moving the head in 3-d space is an exceptionally hard thing to do but Khal upped the level of difficulty to a place many animators wouldn’t go.
         Not only are they all doing the swaggle you’ll notice they are all TALKING while they are doing it. This is back in the days where you had to use a timing sheet to pace your animation and a head swaggle doesn’t work if its too slow or too fast so he had to figure out the right speed so it looked natural while the character finishes what they have to say while not interfering with the distinct mouth shapes.
          Not only did Khal do it without any shifting weight problems or timing issues he would often do it while moving the rest of the body. This isn’t his signature move just because he was good at it.This is his signature move because he was one of the only people skilled enough to DO IT AT ALL.

    Milt Khal was a MASTER.

  • God, I can’t express to you how fucking DELIGHTED I become whenever they Milt Khal Head Swaggle Post graces my dash with its presence again.
